Just Bead It
This wildly popular bead craft store runs in a very eclectic vein. It specializes in exotic beads and unique focal pieces from Indonesia, India, Asia, Czechoslovakia, the Philippines and elsewhere. Strands of freshwater pearls glow in many shades of white, black, pink, blue, brown and green. And beads of every size, color and shape imaginable--in glass, crystal, semi-precious and precious stone, wood and metal--are sorted by type and sectioned out in easy-to-cruise aisles. African and Indonesian art and textiles are scattered around the store, as well as fun fad goods.

Personal Art
Staff members will re-string and hand-knot for you at $2 per inch for a classic look. However, if you'd rather do it yourself, how-to books are located in the back. So, even if you're among the aesthetically challenged, you too can enjoy the thrill of making and wearing your own art.

The Downtown Shopper: Gifts from Downtown
By Julie Lovins

Global Beads, 345 Castro, is well-known for much besides what must be the area's best collection of beads: most notably an international array of decorative objects, clothing and accessories.

They thought he was crazy when Crisanto Castro designed a 60-foot-wide street in Mountain View in the 1860s. After all, cars weren't even invented yet. Today, his critics would be impressed to see diners at umbrella tables, shoppers stroll expansive sidewalks and two lanes of traffic — all on that same street, which today boasts more than 50 restaurants with a dozen cuisines ranging from Thai to Turkish. Take your feet down historic Castro Street for the food, but save some time for exploring.

Global Beads: 345 Castro St.: More beads than you could string together in a lifetime (50,000 types) are sold in this huge (5,000-square-foot) space, which also offers an impressive selection of masks, clothing and gifts from around the world. Bead classes abound, too.
