Description
Tibetan dZi beads are felt by Tibetans to be of supernatural origins. Beliefs include: protection, ornaments of Semi-Gods who threw them away if they had a blemish – this is said to be the reason that few beads are found in perfect condition, they are petrified worms, when worn protects the wearer from evil or catastrophe, and used by doctors to cure (medicine grind).
The etching is of agate is accomplished by painting patterns on the surface of the stone using alkali (potash, white lead, and washing soda have all been used).
